VIT Attendance Rules & VTOP Grading Policy
The 9-Pointer Exemption Rule
VIT is renowned for its academic freedom policy for top performers. Under academic ordinances, students holding a CGPA of 9.00 or higher at the start of the semester are exempt from mandatory attendance. They can manage their own study hours without facing debarment, provided they appear for internal CATs and laboratory evaluations.
Mandatory 75% for CGPA < 9.00
For all students with a CGPA below 9.00, VIT strictly enforces 75% course-wise attendance. Attendance is logged in real-time on the VTOP portal by course instructors. Falling below 75% marks the student as ineligible for the FAT (Final Assessment Test).
Medical Condonation (65% to 74%)
If your attendance on VTOP is between 65% and 74%, you can submit medical documents endorsed by the campus Health Centre Doctor within the notified deadline. Condonation requires approval from the respective School Dean and payment of the prescribed administrative condonation fee.
'N' Grade and Course Re-Registration
Students with attendance below 65% (or below 75% without approved condonation) receive an 'N' grade. The course credits are withheld, and the student must re-register for the course during subsequent summer or regular semesters, paying credit tuition fees.
